Meet our first Who Am I? email
Hello everyone,
My name is Linda Underhill, my husband is Larry, we had two
mini schnauzers, Heidi and Crosby, brother and sister out of the same
litter.
Heidi became diabetic when she was 7 years old, Crosby when he was
9 years old, Heidi went to the Bridge on April 3 2005, she would have
been 14 years that June, Crosby went to be with his sister on April 16,
2006, he would have been 15 years old. Both my kids were diabetic,
both had had cancer and Crosby also had Cushings. I became a member
of a diabetic list right away , this list is the greatest. I could
go on and on about the RB group and what I have learned from it, the people
are all fantastic, we all laugh, cry together and help one another. I don't
know what I would of done without it, we had a great vet, but he would
always ask me what the list was talking about and what they thought of
certain things pertaining to animal diabetes. I really think, no,
I know I trained him in certain ways of treating pet diabetes, he
was amazed at the things I knew (and he didn't) because of our group.
Larry & I waited a year before even talking about another pet, Heidi
and Crosby took our hearts with them the day they left us all alone, it
has now been two and three years since they went to Heaven, not a day goes
by that a candle in front of their pictures is not lit. Finally,
one evening I was reading the paper and I saw an ad for a mini-schnauzer
for sale. Well, that did it, I told Larry I was going to call but I really
don't think he thought I would, we were getting ready to leave for Tennessee
in a few days, but that never entered my mind at the time, I called and
the lady said they couldn't take care of this little girl any longer
and wanted to sale her, I ask a few questions and a few hours later we
got to meet this little schnauzer, she looked so pitiful, the lady had
cut her hair so short she did not even look like a mini, I looked at Larry
and our eye contact said yes, we will take her, her name was Olga, yep,
after the couple left I picked her up and looked her right in the eye and
said You are no longer Olga,
Your name is Gretchen Rae Underhill,
She has been the best, sweetest little girl ever, she is not Heidi
or Crosby but she sure knows she is loved and I guess you could say just
a little spoiled...We are trying real hard to keep her healthy, she was
10 months old when we got her, she had first time baby shots from the breeder
but nothing since then, she was not abused but really neglected. I only
pray she does not become diabetic....but IF it happens I know it is treatable
and I know where I can get HELP if needed... See Ya!
Linda

How did the diagnosis of diabetes in your pet change your life?
We were devastated at first, didn't think we could do it, but after we
got the hang of it with food and shots and the help of the Rainbow list
it got to be old hat, our friends and family knew we could not go out in
the evening until after 6:00 when Heidi was fed and had her shot, they
all understood, we never traveled much so we did not change our life style
much at all. She was our child and she came first..
