If you use a U-40 insulin such as:
Vetsulin
Caninsulin
PZI
You do not have to use the U-40 syringes that
you buy from your veterinarian
BUT
if you decide to use U-100 syringes that are
designed for human diabetics
then you must correct for the difference in
the strength of the insulin when you fill the syringe.
The conversion works like this.
If you are giving your pet 10 units of VETSULIN
( a U40 insulin) then you would have to multiply by 2.5 if you want to
use a U100 insulin syringe which is much smaller and more comfortable for
injecting.
Above example would convert like this:
I use to give Queenie 10 units of caninsulin
but I wanted to use a U100 insulin syringe
that equals 25 units on a U100 syringe. I
made Queenie's dose bold and purple to give you an example. Dr. Marlene
also has a conversion of Maggie May's insulin dose at the bottom of this
page.
Here is a conversion chart to make it easy
for you:

An email from Dr. Marlene and why she changed to U100 syringes.
Date: Mon, 03 Dec 2007
Hi,
I have a Bichon, Maggie May.diagnosed on May 6, 2007...She is on Vetsulin
[9 units]since then, and my vet had started her on the U40 tarpoons...
I switched and converted [22.5 units-this is 2 1/2 times the 9 units
in the U40 tarpoon] to: BD ultra fine SHORT, 31 gauge, half unit..I order
them from DiabeticExpress.com...as you see I order 3 boxes at a time, as
there is no cost for shipping that way....They also have the syringes without
the 1/2 units. You can order other supplies as well from this company.
They are quite efficient...
I hope that I have been of help..
