| Our Lizy, a Cairn Terrier, was diagnosed with diabetes in February
2005. When we first heard the diagnosis we thought for sure that
it meant the end of the line for our little girl. Here we are 11
months later and Lizy's diabetes is under control.
Lizy will be 9 years old on July 21, 2006. From the very beginning
of her life, she has had many health issues ... most of which are allergy-related.
We had her tested for allergies at the University of Pennsylvania and that
is where we learned that she is allergic to grass. Can you imagine?
I truly believe that the years of steroids, antibiotics, etc., given to
her for allergy-related illnesses contributed to her diabetes.
Lizy receives two shots (10 units in the AM; 10 units in the PM) of
Novolin N. It is truly amazing how still she sits while I am injecting
her. Who ever said that dogs are not smart? I believe that
she knows that the little pinch is keeping her alive!!
I am so encouraged by this website and the many stories that I have
read about other animals with diabetes. I can feel the support!
