What could be sweeter then a canine with diabetes!

Cain

| Cain is an 11 year old yellow lab. His registered name is Destiny’s
Hurricane, however he acquired the nickname “Sir” early in his life
and answers to this probably more than his real name. I have
had him since he was 5 weeks old. For the 1st three years of his
life he was a wild man. I can’t say how many times I came home to
find my house ransacked, only to find out he had escaped and had a big
party with his Old English sister, Maggie. Cain has been quite the ball
player, from chasing tennis balls to rolling his big red ball and hiking
it between his legs like a football player. Walking him has always
been like walking a tank in overdrive. Cain was diagnosed with
Cushings Disease at age 6. I can remember being so afraid I was going
to lose him. He went through his induction on Lysodren like a champ
and has been very well under control for the past 5 years. During
that time he was also diagnosed with hypothyroidism, one more diagnosis.
When Cain was 6, his brother, Titan, came to live with us. Titan
and Cain hit it off instantly. I believe Titan has kept him young
and active.
This winter Cain started losing weight, nothing drastic, and to be honest
it was welcome as he has always been on the hefty side. In February
he began to just slow down. I took him to the vet and then we got
the next diagnosis – diabetes. It was amazing how sick he got in
such a short time. He has been a trooper through all this.
He has tolerated everything from the injections to blood sticks.
Cain is the most kind, gentle soul, he loves being alive. He has
always had such a good disposition and I believe that is what has made
him such a good patient and survivor. I believe he is now regulated,
which I thought would never happen. It is my hope that we can tackle
this bump in the road with as much success as he has had with his Cushings.
